Most excellent post! For years, I have been calling the 16 acre site (America's cleanest construction site... completely uncontaminated by... construction) "the hole that Pataki built". Honestly, even a mediocre governor could have had something built-- or at least in progress- by now... rather than what ex-Gov. Pataki did-- play off constituencies against each other that shouldn't even be invited to the discussion (and yes, I mean you, 9-11 families). The former governor has used endless controversy that he has helped foster (and he has helped fester) keep any and all plans for anything at all-- be it memorials, or towers, or parks, or anything else-- from coming to fruition. THE WTC SITE IS STATE OWNED LAND-- THERE WAS NO NEED FOR HIM TO HAVE SCREWED AROUND! At some point, he had the power to just say "Enough! This is what I'm doing!" That would be out of character, however.
The ex-gov just reveled in keeping other interests stirred up, and seemed to have no interest in getting anything built... and so, over 5 1/2 years on... we have a hole.
Needless to say, within days (if not hours) of Al D'Amato's friend leaving office... construction activity started. We'll see if it goes anywhere... Pataki has left a mightly legacy of inaction!!!
