Bush Plans Diplomacy on N. Korea's Arms Effort
Nuclear Capability Unclear, Officials Say
By Peter Slevin and Glenn Kessler, Page A01
President Bush said yesterday he would use diplomacy to avert a crisis over North Korea's surprise admission that it has been operating a covert nuclear weapons program, as senior U.S. officials worried that a confrontation with the isolated Stalinist government could destabilize Asia as the administration pursues plans to disarm Iraq.

The next new thing. Preemptive satire.

Stella McCartney doesn't need to work, does she?

See, it's provocative because it plunges, and the front might slip and let you catch a glimpse of... um. Never mind.

Josh Marshall has an interesting story about media manipulation by the Thune campaign (remember him? The one Bush appeared with at Mount Rushmore the day he announced that there wasn't going to be any drought relief?).

Well, he appears to have found other ways to get a leg up.

Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday we highlighted volunteer opportunities. The campaigns are thrilled by the flood of volunteers. We're getting messages from them like this:

"I wish you all could be in our headquarters right now. As we say in Arkansas, I'd like "to hug your neck!" The energy and momentum that you all have brought into our campaign is terrific. People have been calling from all over the country wanting not only to donate, but to get involved at the grassroots level. And that's what it's all about!"

Being a part of these campaigns is so important, we decided to redouble that message today. Unless we play we cannot win.

Today's recommended action is to get out and help. But not just a few hours. We are asking you, if you can, to consider taking a few vacation days before the election and give a solid chunk of time, at least Friday through Tuesday, to a great campaign.

In the last weeks before the election, this is the kind of help candidates need most. We've added a list of resources for volunteering at the bottom of this message. And please let us know how you intend to volunteer at:

Why should you go to all this trouble?

Why must we wrest control of Congress from Bush and the right-wing?

Our next countdown drumbeat comes from our top-rated member contribution (as of this writing), from Daniel Cook-Huffman of Huntingdon, PA:

Reason #18 -- Supreme Court Appointments.

Daniel's top rated comment:

"It is likely that Renquist, O'Connor, and Stevens will retire during the next year or two. If the Republicans control both chambers of Congress when they retire, we're in BIG trouble."

We couldn't agree more with Daniel. The appointments Bush makes in the next two years will affect our nation for the next *forty* years. Not just Supreme Court appointments, but all federal court appointments. Without the check and balance of a Democratic Senate, we're in BIG trouble.

If you'd like to review other comments and perhaps make your own, go to:

The countdown continues,

This woman is incredibly smart. She intimidates the hell out of me, actually. I always learn something from her, though. She knows her stuff and she does her homework. (How did I end up linking to all these lawyers?) Andyway, take a look.
