Resentful Pitt Can't See What Went Wrong
"My tenure at the SEC has been shorter than I expected," Pitt said in a speech to the Securities Industry Association annual meeting in Boca Raton, Fla.
"I hope my successor isn't greeted with the same climate of attack and partisanship," he said. "It's easy to find fault, and it's easy to criticize. In a partisan environment, criticism often devolves into attack. This doesn't help anyone. In fact, it's not just unproductive, it's counterproductive."
People close to Pitt said his comments yesterday fit with what he has said in private since he announced his resignation on election night. They said he has taken no responsibility for the problems he compounded through his actions.
"There has never been a Washington contretemps based on so much nothing," Pitt told friends about his unceremonious departure. "It is very tough. It is disappointing."
Defiant S.E.C. Chief Exhorts Wall Street and Assails Critics
Taking a page from Richard M. Nixon's resignation speech 28 years ago, Mr. Pitt concluded by echoing a quotation from Theodore Roosevelt that began: "It is not the critic who counts, nor the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doers of deeds could have done better."
Not, perhaps, the most productive attitude for the nation's highest financial regulator to have?
...
In his speech, Mr. Pitt told the executives that he did not thinkthat laying down new rules for Wall Street would bring investors back into the markets.
"Regulation can never substitute for people doing their jobs honestly, dedicated to serving their customers as the fiduciaries they are," he said.
To counteract the widely held feeling of betrayal among investors, he said, "the securities industry must evidence far greater concern for the well-being of its customers than about profits and take-home pay." He added that "there's a limit to how much regulation or oversight can correct for greed."
Remember what happened when we replaced good old fashioned good driving with stop lights and road signs? Communism, goddamnit! barked Pitt, twitching, the specks of foam on his beard glistening in the stage lights while burly sales assistants off to the side of the podium tensed and the attendant prepared the leather Krugman chewtoy and the tranquilizer gun.
