Wife Testifies She Was 'in a Fog' Just Before Her Car Struck HusbandA former beauty queen on trial for murder in the death of her husband testified today that she was "in a fog" when she drove toward him in her car, and that she had no intention of running over him and killing him.
In her second day on the witness stand, Clara Harris refused to corroborate other witnesses' testimony that she felt rage toward her husband of 10 years, David Harris, 44, for having an affair with his receptionist at his orthodontist practice here.
Shortly before David Harris was killed last July 24 in a hotel parking lot, Clara Harris, who is now 45, had discovered that he had just spent two hours in a room upstairs with his 39-year-old mistress, Gail Bridges. He had vowed a few days earlier that he would break off with Ms. Bridges, who was no longer working for him.
"I was extremely upset," Clara Harris said during cross-examination, referring to the moment she saw her husband and Ms. Bridges emerging from an elevator in the lobby of the Nassau Bay Hilton, smiling, and realized the relationship was not over. "He was holding Gail's hand the way he used to hold my hand when I was special to him."
"You weren't angry?" asked Assistant District Attorney Mia Magness, disbelief etched into her tone.
...
"I was doing everything I possibly could to save our marriage," she said.
Since David Harris's admission a week before his death that he was involved with his receptionist, his wife said she went to great lengths to improve her appearance. She paid $1,500 for a year's membership to a fitness club, went every day to a hairdresser and several times to a tanning salon, and agreed to pay a plastic surgeon a $5,000 deposit for liposuction and breast enlargement surgery.
Clara Harris said that she and her husband had sat down in a bar to discuss the crisis in their marriage and that he had made a series of comparisons between her and Ms. Bridges. He told her, among other things, that Ms. Bridges had a "perfect body" and that she was a "good conversationalist" who did not try to dominate their exchanges, unlike his wife. He also said, according to his wife, that Ms. Bridges "knew how to be real tight and frugal with her money," again unlike his wife, who admitted spending a lot on toys for their twin boys and on decorating their white-brick home in the suburb of Friendswood.
Reading from a pair of cocktail napkins on which she had taken notes of their conversation, Clara Harris recalled that her husband had said she was "too big," meaning overweight, and too "pessimistic."
When she told her husband about her plans to have the plastic surgery, it "made him happy," Clara Harris said.
Can't understand why they don't believe her. Hell, if she didn't run over him with a car after the conversation in the bar, the woman's not well.
What it doesn't mention in the story is that she's raising his twins and his daughter from an earlier marriage.

Pataki Presents Washington With $5 Billion Transit Planwhich does not actually improve transportation from what it was before 9/11/01 or give us a freight or direct commuter link with NJ, or a downtown connection to Westchester or Long Island, because that would keep jobs in Manhattan, which would really upset New Jersey and Westchester.
Governor Pataki had a mouth full of seed corn and could not respond to questions.
