the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition World's Fair took place in St. Louis (you may have seen the movie). The Russo-Japanese war started. The U.S. took control of the Panama Canal. Theodore Roosevelt was elected president.

Madame Butterfly, Give My Regards to Broadway and Mahler's Symphony No. 5 debuted, as did The Cherry Orchard, The Golden Bowl, The Sea-Wolf, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny and Green Mansions.

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, Anton Chekov, Kate Chopin, Antonin Dvorak and Frederic Bartholdi died.

Jeane Dixon, Ray Bolger, Cary Grant, George Balanchine, S.J. Perelman, Adelle Davis, Jimmy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Dr. Seuss, Reinhard Heydrich, B.F. Skinner (did I mention that Ivan Petrovich Pavlov won the Nobel Prize for medicine that year?), Joan Crawford, Joseph Campbell, Sally Rand, Robert Oppenheimer, Salvador Dali, Deng Xiaoping, Pablo Neruda, Fats Waller, Count Basie, John O'Hara, Nancy Mitford, Peter Lorre and Rita Rose Neri were born.

One of them is still around.

Happy birthday, Nonni.
