phone home
Nov. 12th, 2004 07:28 amSince Halloween is over, we're rapidly moving into the season of [your chosen solstice festival/day off when that game is on here].
If you haven't figured out what to get for that hard to shop for person on your list/office grab bag which for which you're only supposed to spend an amount of money which ensures that everyone is going to get something they're hard pressed to think of something polite to say about/relative whose taste you question to the point where you're reasonably certain that they won't see the point of anything you'd be willing to buy for them, I have a suggestion for something you can buy on their behalf.
Or rather, Steve does.
It seems that the soldiers in Walter Reed are limiting contact with their families because they can't afford the phone calls.
Now, you'd think that if we can find the money to give tax incentives to Home Depot for buying chinese ceiling fans, we could spare some money for people who have lost limbs in the service of our country (particularly when our country has been rather casual in its responsibility to demand that service, well, responsibly).
Or if you've been paying attention maybe you wouldn't.
These people have had their benefits cut, and they're heading out into a job market where they aren't going to have a lot of choices.
They should be able to talk to their families.
The party that "supports the troops" has had control of the federal government for four years now. I think we can assume on the basis of past performance that their fiscal priorities for the future do not include supporting the troops.
Let's get our values in play, shall we? The ones about helping the afflicted and doing unto others and such.
I'm sure I read that somewhere.
