Kathleen Troia McFarland, a Republican candidate for the United States Senate, said last night that she grew up in a physically abusive home and became estranged from family members, including a gay brother who contracted H.I.V. and whom she refused to see because of her objections to his lifestyle.

Advisers to Ms. McFarland disclosed this information last night in anticipation of news reports about the family situation, which the advisers said they feared, would make Ms. McFarland appear unsympathetic toward her brother, who later died.

New York's annual Gay Pride festivities are scheduled to conclude today, and Ms. McFarland has sought to appeal to gay Republican voters in her effort to challenge Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton this fall.

Hell, even Spencer won't touch this, and he's not a notably fastidious fellow.
