bastard out of California
Aug. 19th, 2006 03:06 pmand speaking of House Armed Forces Committee Chair Duncan Hunter (who, as I mentioned below, has repeatedly blocked the Senate from changing the rule that withholds pension benefits — which the servicemembers pay for themselves out of the munificent salaries we pay them — from their survivors if their service kills them), it turns out he doesn't have all that much cash on hand just now.
What he does have is a pretty impressive opponent
Let's see. Decorated Desert Storm veteran, minister, and successful businessman with an advanced degree in ethics vs. a guy who thinks the crooked businesses that bought his and Duke Cunningham's votes deserve his support and widows and orphans of servicemembers who die for their country don't.
Mr. Hunter has also been quite active in blocking the 9/11 and abu Ghraib investigations.
Mr. Rinaldi has an ActBlue page, and if you have some change to spare you know what to do.
Keep in mind that any money and national support Mr. Hunter needs to hold his seat is money and national support Republicans can't use somewhere else. I'd love to take his seat, but I'll still be real happy if we take his chair.
I bet a lot of widows and orphans will too.

John graduated with a Bachelors degree in Philosophy and Political Science from Mount Saint Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. During and after college, he served as a sworn city police officer in Ocean City, Maryland.
John then began graduate theological studies in order to become an ordained minister. During Desert Storm, John served as a commissioned officer in the United States Naval Reserve and came to San Diego, California for Chaplain Training. During times of war, there is always a pressing need for ministry to marines in boot camp and John was asked to extend his duty. John received the Navy Achievement Medal*.
Upon completion of his service in San Diego, John returned to police work and became a teacher in West Virginia where he taught high school. During this time, he completed his Master studies in Divinity in preparation for ordination.
John returned to San Diego in 1993, and has made San Diego his permanent home. Here, John served his church as full time minister for five years and then as an associate minister while pursing business interests.
John has extensive experience in financial services. John worked as a stock broker and became a principal of his brokerage. John's other experience includes working as an investment banker, as a mortgage banker, and as a real estate agent. He is currently part owner of the San Diego branch of Silver Linings Mortgage. John enjoyed great success in real estate and worked tirelessly to help many people who would traditionally be excluded from purchasing real estate find homes. Along the way, John earned a Masters of Theology from the University of San Diego focused on ethics in government and business, and he is currently finishing his dissertation in the Doctoral program at the University of San Diego in leadership studies, again with a focus on ethics in politics and business.

Date: 2006-08-19 08:55 pm (UTC)I'll never understand how the electorate voted in a lobbyist to replace a man guilty of taking millions from one. For me, it's attributable to Diebold or a collection of the most gullible voters in the country.

Date: 2006-08-19 09:26 pm (UTC)Since I moved to San Diego, what I missed most about New York was a politically involved populace. Out here, outside of the illegal aliens from Mexico that build the condos and do their home upgades, the voters care more about golf and volleyball than the fact their elected officials steal taxpayer money.
Ain't that the truth
Date: 2006-10-09 10:31 pm (UTC)I moved here from Wisconsin where everybody at leasts votes. The level of public corruption in California was stunning, but the public acceptance of it floored me. I was shocked when Susan Golding not only ran for election, she won! And then a 2nd term on top of that!
Thankfully for Golding, her sugar-daddy (Spanos) has her set up pretty good with a nice income, but I'm betting she at least tries a Nixonian comeback.
As for the 52nd, where I reside, how did Hunter escape the noose that snared his best friend Duke? And what about his home in Alpine? The guy's as corrupt, if not more so, than Cunningham.
