Oh frabjous day, calloo, callay (I chortled in my joy).

Josh Marshall has a very good point.

Just click over for the links.

Can't we just put The Weekly Standard on the case?

Last week, and I quote, "At the request of THE DAILY STANDARD, White House staffers went through the logs to check whether [Wesley] Clark had ever called White House political adviser Karl Rove."

Can we try that again?

I don't mean to pick on any particular 'top White House official'. But the Standard's put Rove's name in the mix. And his phone logs seem readily searchable. So, just at random, let's try him.

How many calls to Bob Novak, say in the second week of July.

Presumably it can't be too difficult, take too long, or involve any issues of privilege since White House staffers did a similar search on behalf of a junior staffer at the Standard only a week ago.

Althea Gibson, who integrated both professional tennis and professional golf for women, is no longer with us.

Since the late fifties was not a time for black faces selling tennis equipment, she was quite poor when she died.

Brave lady.

QUESTION: Yes, but I'm just wondering if there was a conversation between Karl Rove and the President, or if he just talked to you, and you're here at this --

McCLELLAN: He wasn't involved. The President knows he wasn't involved.

QUESTION: How does he know that?

QUESTION: How does he know that?

McCLELLAN: The President knows.

QUESTION: What, is he clairvoyant? How does he know?

Tim has some possible interpretations of this exchange.

Given the way Bush operates, my feeling about this is that Bush "knows" Rove didn't do it just the same way Bush "knew" there were WMDs. Thinks he has reason to think so, and doesn't choose to hear anything different.

Remember back when Dr. Rice was having some difficulties over the WMDs and he defended her not by saying she didn't do what she did, but by saying that she didn't do anything wrong because she's a dedicated and fabulous person?

I'm guessing that he thinks Karl Rove is dedicated and fabulous too.

Remember in All the President's Men, when Woodward got the tip that a name was going to be mentioned in the grand jury testimony of a White House official and went with the story? The White House official later denied that he'd mentioned the name.

Turned out he was willing to, but the grand jury neglected to ask.

Anyway, remember that?

Wonder if Woodward does.

edit: I can't be the first person to point out that the crux of this situation is what the definition of "knows" is.
