Standing on the site where Congress adopted the Bill of Rights, Attorney General John Ashcroft brought his defense of the Patriot Act to the edge of ground zero yesterday and suggested that critics of the act, a sweeping antiterrorism law, "have forgotten how we felt" on Sept. 11, 2001.

Mr. Attorney General:

With all due respect, go fuck yourself.

Thank you.

I can't tell you how angry...

...the AG's nonsense made me. 9/11/01 was my secopnd day back from sick leave. Had I not gone in at 7:30 that morning (we were gonna tear down the desktop we had set up for the temp when I went out on sick leave and put my workstation back up), I would have been getting on a New Jersey-bound Path train at just about the time the first plane hit. Had [livejournal.com profile] bugsybanana not been running late, she would have been at her desk. Had [livejournal.com profile] redaxe and his lady not quit their jobs a few months before, they would have been crossing the promenade to the E train.

We haven't forgotten, nor have we forgiven. But it seems to me that most of us do not feel we have to give up the freedoms we grew up believing America stood for in order to go forward.

In point of fact, I am dreading most of today, and very glad that I will not be within earshot of tv or radio for much of the day. Unfortunately, I will be in Manhattan, and expect to run into all sorts of stuff taking the tragedy that occured and twisting it to further various agendas.

I just pray that, at some pint, saner heads will prevail.

Presumably, how we felt on 9/11 was desperate, mindless panic to the extent of listening to the likes of Bush and Ashcroft because they were in charge. Gotta hold on to that feeling.
