Bush Defends Year-Ago Claim Of End of 'Major Combat' in Iraq
President Appeared Under 'Mission Accomplished' Banner

By Mike Allen, Page A07
One year ago today, President Bush donned a flight suit to land on an aircraft carrier and declare "victory" in Iraq beneath a banner that read "Mission Accomplished," and Democrats fretted that the election -- not just the war -- might be over.

Suit Against Former Judge Seeks Reimbursement for Alabama
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A lawsuit filed Friday against ousted Chief Justice Roy S. Moore said he used arguments "calculated to lose" his Ten Commandments monument case and should pay $550,000 that Alabama owes lawyers who sought the marker's removal.

While this could with some justice be considered a campaign expense for Judge Roy, I'm not entirely sure the FEC will see it that way.

Indonesia Touts Evidence Against Cleric
Report Said to Link Him to Al Qaeda Prompts New Arrest on Departure From Prison

By Alan Sipress, Page A18
BANGKOK, April 30 -- The new arrest of radical cleric Abubakar Baasyir on Friday was based on what the government described as solid evidence he was the leader of a terrorist organization linked to al Qaeda.
[Prosecutors failed to prove this to the satisfaction of Indonesian judges, a notoriously criminal-friendly group, last year, but the US isn't taking no for an answer. Lucky for us someone in the organization forgot that the man was being watched and sent him a fax about bad stuff they planned to do and how he was their boss and all. No, the indonesian people don't buy it either.]

Why this is not a great strategy is sometimes it gets out:

SKOPJE, Macedonia -- Macedonian police gunned down seven innocent immigrants in an ambush two years ago and claimed the immigrants were terrorists to show that the police were participating in the U.S.-led campaign against terrorism, authorities said Friday.

Also, Nancy told the ghouls to back off her husband.

Hey, I started reading your lj a week or two ago when another blogger (Atrios?) linked to it. Just wanted to say you choose interesting articles to write on, and your commentary is excellent. I appreciated your response to Kristoff's NYT oped today. You expressed some of what I've felt lately about the liberal punditry's response to the current situation in Iraq. At least Bob Herbert's column this week had "No Solutions" in the title, huh?

Well, hi.

Bob Herbert. Does he not rock?

If he'd never done anything but the Tulia stories, he'd have done more good for the world than Maureen Dowd would do by taking up hairdressing.

By me, that's a serious compliment ;)
