Shedding Populist Tone, Kerry Starts Move to Middle

Not for nothing, kids, but isn't the middle where most of the, um, people are?

You know, if you deconstruct the way this issue is being framed, it would seem that the political spectrum goes from flat don't care about anything but corporate profits to it would be nice if there were available jobs so folks can feed their children as long as it it's OK with the corporations, and the center is somewhere between the two.

I can understand how people who are making out like bandits on the current system and the people who want their patronage are framing the issue this way. I don't understand why anyone to the left of Attila the Hun, in an election season where Our Fearless Leader's handling of the economy is his worst issue, is letting them get away with it.

Let's leave the whole of-by-and-for the people human dignity thing out of it, because I know it makes our friends inside the beltway nervous. Let's just look at it on a strictly pragmatic basis.

The only thing all those millions and millions of unemployed and underemployed and undervalued and thrown away people have that no-one has figured out how to reliably take away from them just yet is their vote. Perhaps they'd be willing to donate those to the cause if we condescended to notice them.

You're not going to lose the middle that way. It may not be true at the dinner parties you personally go to, but in the electorate, these people are the middle.

Jiminy H. Crickets, folks, you can go back to ignoring them after November if you just can't stand it to live in the same world with them, but right now, if you don't think a second Bush administration is a good idea, you need these folks, and you need to admit it to them, all in public and everything.

No-one is asking you to, like, dine with them or anything. You might be surprised how little interested they are in dining with you.

Is the future of your country worth not being such a freaking class snob for six months of your life?
