OK, you all heard that the Red Cross report on Abu Ghraib quotes military intelligence as saying that 70-90% [fact check:
melymbrosia points out in comments that it was up to 90% of _all_ iraqi prisoners who were innocent. We don't know what the percentages were in Abu Ghraib specifically, although Taguba guesstimates that it was upwards of 60%] ? of the prisoners were there for no particular reason, right?
Well, it seems that you have better sources of information (buffs nails) than Sen. Inhofe, a senior Republican member of the Senate Armed Services Committee:
Sen. Inhofe (not that I imagine he personally risks coming even this close to actual news sources), I personally would object strenuously if you were imprisoned without probable cause or representation and anally raped with a broom handle, despite the fact that what you just said as a representative of the american people is more than 10-40% likely to lead to the future deaths of american servicepeople at the hands of the insurgents you just threw a huge propaganda win to.
That's because I'm an american.
Shame on you. You dishonor your office.

Well, it seems that you have better sources of information (buffs nails) than Sen. Inhofe, a senior Republican member of the Senate Armed Services Committee:
First of all, I regret I wasn't here on Friday. I was unable to be here. But maybe it's better that I wasn't because as I watch this outrage that everyone seems to have about the treatment of these prisoners I have to say and I'm probably not the only one up at this table that is more outraged by the outrage than we are by the treatment.
The idea that these prisoners, they're not there for traffic violations. If they're in cell block 1A or 1B, these prisoners, they're murderers, they're terrorists, they're insurgents, and many of them probably have American blood probably on their hands and here we're so concerned about the treatment of those individuals.

Date: 2004-05-11 01:47 pm (UTC)We have to get out of that war now, before the cycle of violence is spiraling out of control.
I can feel it, just as Iraqis now is boiled in anger and seek revange after seeing all those picture. We too will become blinded by anger and start bombing indescriminately once the Iraqis revenge manifested in attrocities agianst our troops.
If in the near future a picture of captured soldiers and then tortured emerges, the entire nation will convulse by violence and demand revange and massive bombing. It'll be Iraq size Fallujah.
Violence beget violence. I can see this is a gust before a storm sweep us all.

Date: 2004-05-11 02:29 pm (UTC)(As bad as all this was, the one thing you really wanted to avoid was falling into the hands of the Iraqi police where the sort of treatment described above was seemingly more intense and boundless and mixed with corruption. So, for instance, you might undergo mock execution and threats to have your wife and daughters raped. And then if you didn't pay the bribe, they'd turn you over to the Americans with claims that you were some sort of hardened terrorist who surely had prized information, etc., perhaps bin Laden's valet or videographer or something.)
