OK, wrap your mind around this: somebody wrote this about the Unity Convention (of minority journalists) and somebody let it go to print
Ah, it was a beautiful sight: African Americans, Asians, Latinos and Native Americans side by side, united as one in their quest for . . . free food. They're hungry reporters, after all, and some things (mini biscuits and ham, chocolate, alcohol) transcend ethnicity.

Pork and alcohol? Transcend ethnicity?

They do transcend ethnicity. Just not religion. A Caucasian Muslim or Indian Jew has to avoid pork, a black Mormon or Inuit Zoroaster can't have alcohol, but an Arabic Asartu can have both.

The word "ethnicity" covers religion as well as skin color and language. I think you'll need to find another nit to pick.

Hmm. So it does. I'd not heard that before, so I started looking over various definitions of the word from various sources on the web, and about 75% of them do explicitly mention religion. I retract my quibble.
