Clearly whoever compiled this list of the fifty most awesomely bad songs ever did not realize that Barry Manilow covered (and made a video for) Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love (but I won't do that)"

They also were apparently too late for the summer of "Billy, Don't Be a Hero" and "The Night Chicago Died"

We can agree (I have to be moderate about something, right?) that these are extremely bad songs.

I've got a nickel
shiny and new
I'm gonna buy me
all kinds of candy
that's what I'm gonna do.

Oh I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
Where I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things
That a woman ain't s'posed to see
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me

it felt good to be out of the rain
in the desert you can't remember your name
because there ain't no-one for to give you no pain

Mildly disappointed that BTO's "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is not in the #1 spot, and simply astounded that it's not even on the list.

Sigh. I'm only mildly embarassed to say I like a couple of the songs on that list. Mostly I have no idea what the songs on that list sound like, having never heard or heard of them. Yes, I am a musical reactionary, why do you ask?

No "MacArthur Park"? No "Safety Dance"?

I proposed once that if schadenfreude is the enjoyment of another's pain, then schadenlieder should describe the enjoyment of really bad songs. Funny, it hasn't caught on...

aieeeeee! I was saving MacArthur Park for DefCon3!

I like it. It's a good word. My husband particularly will enjoy it, since he's an AOR punk and I'm purest top ten.

Of course, we both stopped listening to music on the radio a long, long time ago.

This is so obvious I can't believe it didn't make the list:

MacArthur Park is melting in the dark, all the sweet,
green icing flowing down,
Someone left the cake out in the rain,
I don't think I can take it, cause it took so long to bake it,
And I'll never have that recipe again

If I were going to be really, really honest, I'd admit to liking about half the songs on the list.

*facepalm* I love that song.

And as for Dylan:

Well, they'll stone you and say that it's the end.
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again.
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car.
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar.
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone,
Everybody must get stoned.

How clever! I never would have thought that song was about drugs.

Go away, little girl, go away, little girl;
I’m not supposed to be alone with you.
I know that your lips are sweet,
But our lips must never meet.
I belong to someone else and I must be true.

Oh, go away, little girl, go away, little girl;
It’s hurting me more each moment that you delay.
When you are near me like this,
You’re much too hard to resist.
So, go away, little girl, before I beg you to stay.

What is it with men and songs about little girls? Eurgh.

And in the "you should not have quit your day job" category--

Well, I met a man out in Hollywood
And I ain't namin' names
But he really worked me over good
Just like Jesse James

Yes, he really worked me over good
He was a credit to his gender
He put me through some changes
Lord, sorta like a waring blender

Poor, poor pitiful me!
Poor, poor pitiful me!
Oh, these boys won't let me be
Lord have mercy on me
Woe, woe is me!

Actually, Barry Manilow didn't record Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love (but I won't do that)." But he did record "Read 'Em & Weep," which was written and produced by Jim Steinman, and also recorded by Meat Loaf.
