news judgment
Sep. 4th, 2004 01:51 pmThose of you who saw the story about Ben Barnes, the then-Lt. Gov of Texas who admits to pulling strings to get then-partyboy George W. Bush into the Air National Guard to curry favor with then-Congressman George HW Bush (Google News has the first rash of stories appearing on August 27) will be pleased to know that the Washington Post has now picked up the story.
I think we can all agree that the Saturday of a three-day weekend after a national political convention which was built around Our Fearless Leader's greater love for the millitary and fitness as Commander in Chief than a man who volunteered to serve and requested a posting in-country is, in anyone's news judgment, the very best time to go with this story.
Certainly the fact that Sixty Minutes is going to devote a segment to Mr. Barnes and his recollections is entirely beside the point.
Congratulations to the editors of the Post, who have clearly set aside the policy of ignoring stories which are inconvenient to the current administration for which they have recently, and obviously sincerely, apologized.

Date: 2004-09-04 07:50 pm (UTC)Barnes is a Texas politician. I've read too much Molly Ivins to be shocked that his virtue is fungible.
I think someone probably convinced him that the path of virtue was nicely paved, but this story has been around for years.
